Gees, More Rules

Ewww Gross!

s-braces1.jpgTaking care of your teeth is your #1 priority during your orthodontic treatment. We want you to brush 2-3 times daily for at least 2 minutes. We also recommend flossing every day as well. Poor oral hygiene causes many bad things, from decalcification (ugly white spots that form around your brackets) to decay (yucky cavities). Make sure when brushing, you are getting above and below your brackets. We provide you with special toothbrushes and floss threaders to use during your treatment. They don’t work unless you use them! :) We also recommend that you rinse with a fluoride rinse every night before bed. Don’t rinse with water afterward. If you have any questions about how to brush or to find out if you are brushing well, we will be happy to help you out- Just ask! Nasty teeth move slowwwww! Keep ‘em clean!

Saving Brace

Broken brackets and bent wires make your treatment last even longer! Eating chewy, sticky or hard foods can cause your brackets to come loose and your wires to bend. EVEN SUGAR FREE GUM!!! Stay away from: gum, laffy taffy, airheads, starbursts, gummies, now & laters, caramel, tootsie rolls, ice cubes, pens, popcorn, hard breads, and whole fruits and veggies. Cut up apples, carrots, etc. and cut corn off the cob. If it feels uncomfortable to chew, you probably should not be eating it. Remember when eating any sweets, brush immediately afterwards (with or without braces). Lots of sugar and bad brushing = yucky teeth! If you do have a bracket come loose, give us a call so we can fix you up!

Rubber Band Man

Rubber bands are used to help move your teeth. If you don’t wear them correctly, you will wear your braces longer than you want! Elastics should be worn 24/7!!! Only take them out to brush and replace them with new ones. Always be prepared with extras! If you get low or run out, swing by the office (after hours- check the mailbox outside) or give us a call. The first couple days may be tough, stay strong! If you stop and start again, it will make it feel worse. If you miss a day, don’t double up- just do better. :)

Come and See Us!

Appointments are based on “Dr. Time”. This pretty much means that we place each patient at a specific time depending on the type of appointment and how long we think it will take Dr. P to tell his latest tales. As great as he may be, he cannot be in 2 places at once. This makes being on time for your appointments very important. We try hard to see all of our patients within 5-10 minutes of their appointed time. Being late for your appointment may mean we do not have enough time for the next patient, so your appointment may need to be rescheduled. We do understand that sometimes things arise. In those cases, please give us a call to see if we can still fit you in. If you have an emergency, please call before coming to ensure that you do not have to wait for an appointment. Missing appointments means you will be in treatment that much longer. We know you love us, but you don’t want to wear your braces forever. Please note, 8:00-9:00 am and after 3:00 pm are our first appointments to go! If you have one of these prized possessions and don’t show up, it will be several weeks before we have another one to give you! If your next appointment is going to be a long appointment, we will do our best to accommodate your schedule but it may be necessary to come during school hours. Our van pooling service lasts from Labor Day to the first of May. Between those months, you will be responsible for making it to your appointments. (So be nice to your parents!)

Last Note! (Phew Finally!)

Our office does not check for cavities during your appointments with us. (Unless they are monsters!) This is why you must continue to see your general dentist every 4-6 months for your regular cleanings and exams.

Also, if your dentist needs your wires removed for any procedures, let us know ahead of time so we can schedule you to come in before your appointment with them.

Most of all!!! We are so happy to have you as part of our family! Congratulations on beginning your journey to a more beautiful smile! If we can do anything to make sure this an easier or better experience for you, that is what we are here for!
